Breast Enlargement/ Breast Augmentation Surgery
The size of a woman’s breasts are genetically determined. Once developed, the breasts may fluctuate in size in response to changes in weight, pregnancy and breast feeding. Most women have breasts of slightly different sizes, but occasionally a very marked difference may develop between the breasts. Breast enlargement / breast augmentation surgery will enable you to change the size of your breasts.
How is breast augmentation / breast enlargement done?
Breast enlargement / breast augmentation can be performed by placing an implant either behind the breast tissue or behind the muscle on which the breast lies. The breast implants used in breast enlargement / breast augmentation are usually inserted through incisions underneath the breasts (inframammary fold), around the areola or in the armpit. The options for breast enlargement / breast augmentation will be discussed at your consultation with Mr Humzah Consultant Plastic Surgeon. Breast enlargement / breast augmentation surgery is performed with a general anaesthetic and you will need to be admitted as a day-case or for an overnight stay in hospital as appropriate. If appropriate breast augmentation / breast enlargement can be performed as a day case procedure.
Breast implants used in breast augmentation / breast enlargement.
A breast implant used in breast augmentation / breast enlargement is made of an outer layer of silicone and may be filled with silicone gel or salt water. Some breast implants used in breast augmentation / breast enlargement are round and others are shaped. Either breast implant can give excellent results. The manufacturers life expectancy of breast implants is 10 or more years, although breast implants used in breast augmentation / breast enlargement can stay in without problems for much longer.
Many studies have been carried out to establish whether silicone breast implants used in breast enlargement / breast augmentation cause certain diseases. At present there is no evidence to suggest that silicone breast implants are associated with an increased incidence of breast cancer. There is also no evidence to suggest that these breast implants cause autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Mr Humzah will discuss the current information regarding these implants with you.
